Abstract/Summary
Groundworks Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation comprising of five trenches on land to the rear of 14 Grafton Road, Brigstock, Northamptonshire. The work was carried out at the proposed development site between the 19th and 20th October 2022. The evaluation results suggest that the south-western portion of the site has been heavily disturbed by the presence of a former orchard which was grubbed up. Evidence of rooting and grubbing out was evident in trenches 1,2 and 3 and the natural geology had been severely truncated. Trench 5 contained an Iron Age ditch and a 5th -7th century gully. An undated gully was also identified in trench 1. Trench 2 identified two Post-medieval cottages that are shown on the historic Ordnance Survey mapping. One of these cottages is built in red brick and of likely 19th centuty origin, while the second cottage is stone built and may be considerably earlier.
