Monument record 7581/1 - Roman quarry, Queen Street

Archaeological observation during residential development identified part of a Roman stone quarry pit. Smaller pits in the vicinity may have been to test for areas of better stone. Roman ditches were also identified.

{1} Archaeological observation was undertaken during residential development of a site to the south of Queen Street. A portion of a late Roman stone quarry was identified in the north-eastern part of the site, although its full extent was not determined. However, the large quantities of waste stone found indicate that the pit extended considerably further east and suggest a significant industrial operation. A number of smaller pits in the same vicinity may be test pits used to find the best quality stone. To the west, Roman ditches may be related to the water of the surrounding field, althought there was no evidence that they were directly associated with the quarry. There was no evidence of domestic activity on the site.
