Full Description

{1} Souterrain Archaeological Services undertook a Historic Building Recording on a 19th century Stables & Carriage House range that is situated within the curtilage of Upton Mill. The range is aligned NE/SW and originally consisted of three separate stabling compartments and a double carriage house at the SW end. The range was brick-built in Flemish Garden Wall Bond and roofed in Welsh slate with staffordshire-type blue copings. The building underwent several alterations within a relatively short time frame in the 20th century, demonstrating a potential for historical importance/significance. The analysis has revealed that the stable range and yard enclosure underwent a number of significant alterations within a relatively short period of time, as most of the changes seem to have occurred within two generations, 30 to 60 years.

{2} Archaeological Investigation was undertaken at Upton Mill House in 2024 by Souterrain. The groundwork revealed that efforts were made in the late 19th century to avoid seasonsal inundation, prior to the construction of the stable block and carriage house range. Pottery from the buried soil horizon dated from the mid to late 19th century. Since the soil layer was left undisturbed it does not preclude the potential for the presence of earlier archaeological deposits or features.
