Abstract/Summary
In June 2023, archaeological monitoring, investigation and recording was carried out by Souterrain during the excavation of a drainage pipe trench in the former stable yard of Upton Mill House Northampton. The works took place prior to the conversion of a late 19th century brick-built stables and carriage house range to a domestic annexe. Following the conversion, further observations were made during groundwork for the re-surfacing of the yard in August 2024.The buildings and yard lie within the curtilage of Upton Mill, a Grade II Listed Building. In addition to the history attached to mill site which may be traced back to the early medieval period, the surrounding landscape is rich in prehistoric to Romano-British remains. Investigation of the drainage revealed an old ground surface (buried soil) which was last extant around the third quarter of the 19th century. There was no evidence pertaining to earlier periods. The buried soil was at a sufficient depth not to be disturbed by subsequent yard-resurfacing works. The report provides an illustrated synopsis of the historical and archaeological context of the investigation and its results
