Full Description
{1} Archaeological evaluation on land south of St Peter's Way identified soil horizons that may be the backfilled defensive ditch of the former town defences in Trench 10. The deposits were augered at the northern, middle and southern ends; the resulting depths forming a rounded ditch profile. The location of the ditch lies of the projected alignment of the medieval defences. These deposits were sealed by a 19th century levelling deposit. Similar deposits were also observed in Trench 7, but appeared to be tipping towards the south. These were interpreted as the remains of the late Saxon bank.
