Summary

A group of disused farm buildings and structures at Grange Farm, Irthlingborough Road. The survey found that the farm originated shortly after enclosure in the early 19th century and was extensively remodelled between 1861 and 1884 as a planned livestock farm. Surviving buildings included cattle sheds, shelter sheds and a granary, with evidence of the site's development from a traditional farmstead to a more industrialised mixed farming operation focused on cattle, dairying and crop storage.

Full Description

{1} Group of disused farm buildings at Grange Farm, Irthlingborough Road, Wellingborough, associated with an early 19th-century post-enclosure farmstead. The surviving buildings comprised cattle sheds, shelter sheds, a granary and ancillary agricultural structures dating from the early 19th to early 20th centuries. Constructed of limestone rubble, ironstone and brick, the buildings formed part of a planned livestock farm focused on cattle husbandry, dairying and crop storage. The complex retained evidence of successive phases of development, including 19th-century remodelling into an industrial-style farm layout and later additions such as cow sheds, a granary and a Dutch barn. Changes to the farm post-war were piecemeal, mainly associated with repair as these traditional buildings became increasingly obsolete and redundant, the exception being the recent re-use and sub-division of the granary into modern offices and conversion of into a garage serving the farmhouse.
