Summary

Limited archaeological observation during construction of supermarket on the south side of High Street in 1973 noted that some of the northern and eastern parts of the site had been quarried in the medieval period. There were eight pits dating to the 17th-19th century, as well as post-medieval ditches and 19th century boundary walls.

Full Description

{1}Archaeological watching brief undertaken on the south side of the High Street during the construction of a new supermarket in 1973. The site was not stripped as part of the development; the building rests on concrete piles, so detailed observation was not possible. Medieval quarry pits were noted, property boundaries corresponding to those depicted in the 1803 map were observed. A number of pits dating to the 17th-19th centuries were also recorded.

{2} Medieval quarries and post-Medieval pits (SP 57486255), on the south side of Daventry High Street. Development of the area in 1973 revealed a number of deep quarry-pits filled with loose stones and
containing a few fragments of 14th-century Potterspury roof tile. Sherds of 13th and 14th-century pottery, a number of post-Medieval pits and ditches, and walls of 19th-century property boundaries were also discovered.
