Full Description

{1} Ansate tile inset "LEG XX VV" found at Whittlebury.

{2} When tree-felling near the church (ie area SP 690442) in 1822 various finds were made, including the tile stamp, and a small palstave. "Then, or subsequently" were found a number of Greek, consular, and imperial Roman coins.

{3} "The coins are a very mixed lot, and more likely to have been lost by a modern collector-some rector of Whittlebury at a time of spring cleaning - then left by the Romans. Tiles, celt and coins might all have belonged to such a collection. But as the coins were apparently found after the tiles (Baker in fact does not positively assert this) it is possible that there is no connexion between them "(but not likely).

{4} Part of a possible Romano-British quern was found in the churchyard.

{12} Northampton Museum have no other information about the finds.
