Full Description
{1} The green was centered at SP68887819, but is now at 6914678131. The market cross consists of a worn socket stone and the entire shaft. The broken top of the cross replaced and secured with copper bands. There is no trace of gyves or securing points, so its identification as a whipping post is questionable. Photograph?
(2) The Market Cross was sited on Church Green and had been moved to the east end of the village. The cross consists of a plain socket and worn shaft.
{3} Cross, probably C15th. A round shaft set in a square plinth with a ridged top. It was removed to its present location from the churchyard c.1820.
{4}The position of the market place is probably indicated by the location of the market cross in the C18th, immediately to the north of the church. The cross has since been moved twice and no longer stands in the presumed market area.
{5} The cross was moved from its historic position opposite the church in c1820 to a new position at the junction of Newlands with Haslebech and Clipston roads. In 1993, the Whipping cross was re-sited to its current position at the junction of Church Street and Gynwell, outside the Methodist Chapel.
{6} Undated photo;
{7} [Former list description] A whipping cross stands at the E end of the village. It is now a plain socket with a short worn shaft.
{8} Situated at SP 69146 78131 are the remains of this cross. It comprises a worn socket stone and entire shaft, the broken top half having been replaced and secured with copper bands. No traces of gyves or their securing points could be seen and the opinion of authy {5} cannot be confirmed. See photo. The village green is a small area of grass centred SP 6888 7819.
