Summary

A variety of finds were recorded during the construction of an extension to the post office in 1956. A medieval well and possible 17th century cellar were also found.

Full Description

{1} C12-14th pottery found on site of General Post Office at Derngate (NM D94/1956-7).

{2}Large cut sandstone object in shape of cog-wheel, possibly part of a column, was found at depth of about 7 feet; donated by MOW. Also found was a C14th baluster jug with green-yellow glaze & manganese criss-crossing, possibly from a medieval well; also other miscellaneous C13-14th pot sherds; donated by Postmaster General;

{3} Medieval well with C14th pitcher; photograph; also bones recovered; complete example of lead-glazed baluster pitcher of C14th with other medieval pottery fragments;

{4} Some 12th-14th century pottery was found during construction work in 1965. [This date appears to be incorrect since it gives reference NDC M57].
