Summary

An Anglian Water trench at the bottom of Kingswell Street revealed a build-up of road surfaces, the earliest of which was composed of heavy limestone slabs.

Full Description

{1} Build-up of road surfaces observed; lowest composed of heavy limestone slabs overlying mixed grey silt at depth of 2.70m; ironstone walling was associated with some later roads; finds of pottery & leather suggest medieval date;

{2} Notes that features observed by Robert Moore & Brian Giggins agree with those observed & published earlier by NDC archaeologists;

{3} Build-up of road surfaces; lowest composed of heavy limestone slabs at 2.7m overlay mixed grey silt; finds of late Saxon pot sherd & medieval pottery & leather;

{4} States that grid reference revised; earlier given reference is that of observation in Bridge Street which has mistakenly been equated under M149 with site in Kingswell Street; former appears to have been recorded by Robert Moore & Brian Giggins only;
