Summary

Fieldwalking survey has found Roman pottery, coins and building stone indicating the presence of settlement. Prehistoric worked flint has also been found. The site has been partially quarried for gravel.

Full Description

{1} Romano-British pot sherds and coins found in October 1951. The pot sherds and some of the coins are with A.N. Groome of Higham Ferrers Historical Society. Other finds included barbed and tanged and leafed arrowheads, scrapers, a polished flint axe minus butt, and the butt of a greenstone axe. [Source is uncertain as to accuracy of grid reference: finds may not come from this site but just in the vicinity.]

{2} A scatter of building stone, Roman pottery and some coins have been found.

{3} Fieldwalking produced two small pieces of Roman pottery and worked flint.

{4} In 1971 further Roman sherds and a scatter of building stone were found at SP 943694 and SP 945696. At SP 940693, Roman sherds and occupation debris were found.

{5} Ro coins and pottery found at Irthlingborough (SP 9470).

{6} (SP 943694). Roman sherds and coin found October 1951 by Mr Gilbert, No.9 Allen Road, Irthlingborough.

{7} Mr A.N Groome of Higham Ferrers History Soc has material brought to him by Mr Gilbert. It includes barbed and tanged and leaf arrowheads, scrapers, a polished flint axe minus butt, and the butt of a greenstone axe.

Mr Gilbert himself retains pottery and the few low denomination coins which together with those held by Mr Groome he has collected from fields in the immediate vicinity of the above noted reference.
