Full Description

{1} Print of a possible Roman road revealed on the southern side of the A45 in roadworks.

{2} Metalling of possible Romano-British road was photographed by A.Rollings during road construction works; its precise location was not recorded.

{3} A scan evaluation was undertaken on the south side of the A45 opposite the Roman town in order to locate any side-ditches of the road that is assumed to have led from the south gate. The results were positive and suggest a centre-line for the former road at NGR SP91756641.

{4} In the field north of the ironstone quarry and immediately south of the Roman town (SP 91756642) air photographs show a soil mark extending north north west towards the South Gate of the town. No traces of a road were noted in the excavations carried out on this site in 1962-3 but as these took place after stripping for road works the remains of the Roman road could have been destroyed.
