Full Description

{1} Trial excavation undertaken in 1990 by Dennis Jackson. 39 features of probable Saxon date were identified. The features were mostly postholes occurring on an alignment extending 120m north of the bypass;

{3}Evaluation carried out in 1990 found postholes and other features, of probable middle saxon date, were revealed. The features extended for 60m west of the road but the settlement does not appear extensive.

{4, 5} Excavation of an unenclosed settlement comprising a collection of post-built and sunken-floored buildings. The site is known to continue to the south-east with two structures identified during the construction of the bypass [HER no 4581/0/1]. Pottery evidence suggests that the site dates to the 5th-6th century AD, while radiocarbon dates suggest that the site could be longer-lived or have been occupied in two phases, with occupation extending into the 9th century. .
