Monument record 5589/0/1 - Roman Ditches

Excavation at Kirby Hall identified earlier features including several Romano British ditches.

{1} Excavation B Dix, earlier features include several Romano British ditches.

{2} 2 ditches with pottery revealed within the C17th gardens; AD C1st;

{5} The earliest features located by excavation were three ditches which can be dated to the early Roman period by the significant amounts of first-century AD pottery that each contained. The integrity of the ditches was maintained through being sealed by what became the medieval ground surface, which itself was sealed in turn by the construction of the West Terrace of the later gardens. Only one ditch was observed in full profile and none was traced for a greater distance than 8m. Occasional residual and much abraded sherds of late Iron Age and Roman origin occurred through out the succeeding stratification.
