Full Description

{1} In 1536 the monastery also had a windmill, located in Windmill Close, to the west of the fishponds. A mill is first recorded in the 1455-6 rental when held by Thomas Miller together with other property for 24s. The windmill survives as a low, ploughed mound.

{2} The mound is some 20m in diameter; there is no indication of a ditch. Although it has been ploughed it is still about 1m high.

{3} Oral report received via FRCA in connection with a Countryside Stewardship Scheme application, confirms that the windmill mound is still visible within a cultivated field. Although degraded by ploughing, the earthwork still survives. A scatter of associated building debris is still reported. The site is proposed for reversion to pasture in order to preserve the surviving remains.

{4} The site was previously recorded under SP 55 SE 1.
