Monument record 819/0/16 - Modern Mound (Previously Interpreted as Possible Pottery Kiln)

{1} A small mound was identified by earthwork survey, 0.25m high and covering an area c.4x3m. An area of recent disturbance at the west has sherds of medieval pottery at its surface though there are no wasters. A series of above average resistance readings was obtained from the same area demonstrating the need for further intrusive investigation.

{2} The earthworks proved to be the result of modern disturbance, comprising the demolition of previous farm buildings and associated landscaping.

{5} In 1992 a small mound in the western half of the field had a recent disturbance that exposed sherds of medieval pottery, although no evident wasters. The above average resistance readings during resistivity survey suggested the possible presence of a kiln but this was disproved by the trial trenching which followed. The area has since been developed.
