Summary

Contractors trenches excavated at the south end of Derngate in 1975 revealed a substantial wall aligned north-east to south-west.

Full Description

{1} Wall aligned approximately north-east to south-west, minimum width of 1.6m. Foundations cut natural which was revealed at depth of 1.8m. Associated building material was also observed but no finds were recovered. The purpose of such substantial wall underneath and at right-angles to Derngate must be queried.

{2} Wall and floor observed in services trench.

{3} GPO trenches revealed a wall aligned approximately north-east to south-west, minimum width of wall 1.6m. Cutting natural to depth of at least 2.5m below the present ground level. A clay floor to the south-east of the wall rested immediately above the natural at depth of about 1.6m; no finds.

{4} Substantial wall foundation 2.54m deep at its lowest point, running north-east to south-west. A clay floor adjoined on the south-east side at a depth of 1.6m.

{5} Wall and floor.

{?} Wall, metalled surfaces and a pit were exposed near the junction of Spring Gardens and Derngate, and may represent evidence of the medieval defences.
