Monument record 2064 - Site of probable Iron Age and/or Roman settlement

Air photographs show a complex of enclosures and linear ditches forming no coherent pattern. A little Roman pottery has been found in the area. Trial trench excavation identified a number of ditches, but no dating evidence was recovered.

{1} Cropmarks, 1962, Hollowell and Moore;

{2} Two rectangular enclosures of three quarters and a quarter of an acre from which a ditched trackway also runs north, also linear ditches noted;

{5} A little Roman pottery found on the surface.

{7} (SP 824638). Parallel ditches on AP in 1982.

{9} Trial trench excavation was undertaken as part of the Anglian Water pipeline development between Hannington and Lings in November 1992 by NAU contracts. At the more southerly of the two excavations a series of remains were exposed as indicated by the aerial photographs. There were two linear ditches, one of which terminated in the trench. Also exposed were the ditches of part of the west side of the rectangular enclosure, which had recuts indicating a period of maintenance;

{10} Though undated the morphology of the enclosures implies an Iron Age and/or Roman date.

{12} Rectangular marks located on air photographs.

{13} R Hollowell confirmed the above site but has not field-walked it. Site under kale, no surface finds made.
