Find Spot record 1700/0/1 - Unstratified Palaeolithic Handaxe

Summary
Middle or late Acheulean handaxe was found at Great Billing. A Palaeolithic handaxe was also found in the garden of 9 (New Road) Church Walk. These two axes are probably the same axe.

Full Description
{1} Middle or late Acheulean handaxe found at Great Billing, now in the Northampton Museum. Found under the bowling green in November 1955.
{2} Found in garden of No. 9 Church Walk. [Does this contradict above, or does this house now stand on the site of the former bowling green?]
{3} Found in topsoil and probably not therefore in situ.
{4} Drawing of find.
{5} Find of a Palaeolithic mid-late acheulean handaxe from Great Billing.
{6} In Northampton museum; SP81096282.
{7} 1 handaxe found. [Uncertain whether both finds recorded as 1700/0/0 are the same find.]
{8} The Rev Winser and his wife died several years ago. The present owner indicated the area of the former garden, (See OS 6") centred SP 81046282, but this has now been sub-divided and partly built over.
