Full Description
{1} Trial trench excavation of land to the south of the King's Arms. Two possible postholes in the northern end of the trench. Each posthole was approximately 0.3m wide. Also seen was a possible ditch approx 1.5m wide. In the centre of the trench was the lower course of a roughly dressed limestone wall aligned W-E. To the south was small circular feature approx 1m in diameter. This was not fully excavated but may have been a hearth. Beyond was a much larger, possible linear feaure which may be the remains of another wall. All the features showed signs of burning. Interpreted as a possible building. The features were sealed by a thick layer of medieval demolition rubble containing pottery.
The trial trenching demonstrated that in the south-west of the field quarrying had truncated much of the archaeology.
[No plans with report, so exact location of features unknown]
{2} A second phase of trial trenching found a large pit - probably a quarry pit. It had an exposed width of 1m but extended beyond the trench edges. The edge of the pit was irregularly shaped with very steeply sloping sides tapering to a possible rounded base. Several sherds of medieval pottery were retrieved from its fill.
Further features including a sub-circular pit 1m wide and 0.22m deep containing medieval pottery and iron slag which cut a ditch aligned NE-SW. A second ditch containing medieval pottery, 1m wide and 0.2m deep, was seen to the west. A pit and post hole containing slag. A single ditch aligned NE-SW, 0.3m wide and 0.2m deep, containing medieval pottery and iron slag.
