Abstract/Summary

An archaeological desk-based assessment and a trial trench evaluation were undertaken on land west of Church Walk, Weldon, Northamptonshire. Cartographic evidence indicated that the Church Walk and High Street frontages on the northern and eastern sides of the site, had been built upon since the 16th century, with plots extending to the rear. Two trenches close to Church Walk revealed a number of pits and gullies, largely dating to the medieval period, and it is likely that this relates to occupation fronting the lane. The pottery was associated with a small quantity of iron smelting slag, although no furnaces or iron-working hearths were found. A third trench, on the western side of the site revealed no archaeological features and did not confirm suspected Iron Age occupation here.
