Full Description

{1} A random prospecting survey was carried out which located two large anomalies interpreted as pottery kilns.

A single small trench was cut on the location of one magnetic anomaly. This revealed an undraught pottery kiln at a depth of c0.25m beneath the modern surface. The kiln had a circular chamber 1.05m in diameter with an elongated stoking-pit or flue, 1.8m long and 0.95m wide. Parts of the chamber were lined with burnt clay but the fill was generally of loam with ash and burnt clay fragments. No evidence of pedestals or kiln-furniture was found. The entire structure was cut c0.5m into the natural bedrock and was of early Roman date.

{2} A Roman pottery kiln dating to the late 1st or 2nd century AD was located by geophysics. There was no evidence of Roman settlement in the area of the survey.
