Summary

The site of a probable Roman pottery kiln was discovered in 1966 during fieldwalking as a concentration of grass-tempered baked clay, kiln debris and potsherds. The site lies on the fringe of an Iron Age/Roman settlement enclosure. The kiln is located at the eaast end of the golf course, on sand over liassic clay, with a spring nearby.

Full Description

{1}Fieldwalking; a scatter of Roman pot sherds and burnt clay with grass impressions; possible Roman pottery kiln; wrongly located in Church Brampton;

{3} Fieldwalking ahead of trial trenching identified a discrete area of kiln fragments associated with Roman pottery.

{4} (SP 731646). The site of a probable kiln situated east of the golf course on sand over liassic clay with a spring nearby. The kiln was discovered in 1966 through field waking as a concentration of grass tempered baked clay, kiln debris and pottery. The site lies on the fringe of an Iron Age/Romano-British settlement enclosure.
