Abstract/Summary

A series of trial trenches and trial pits were excavated between December 1991 and March 1992 as a secondary stage of archaeological evaluation of a proposed development on the site of Northampton High School for Girls, Northampton (the first stage of the evaluation, a desk-based study, was completed in October 1991). Trenches D and E on the Derngate frontage confirmed the presence of medieval occupation here. More surprisingly, as no medieval streets are known in its area, Trench A, at the south end of the site, also located traces of medieval occupation, comprising a probable posthole building and rubbish pits. Trench C at the east end of the site uncovered Romano-British occupation features. Activity of this period would, however, appear to be on a small scale. Deposits which may relate to the tail end of a bank of the town defences were found in both Trenches A and C.
