Full Description

{1} Outer bailey wall where best preserved on west side includes arch of semi-Norman character.

{2} Postern gate survives.

{3} Published view of postern.

{5} Remains now visible consist of.. Postern gate.. Wall connected with postern gate excavated to proper level..

{6} Letter from Chief Engineer of railway company stating company's intention to dismantle postern gate & rebuild it in new location within boundary wall of railway station; this to serve as memorial to destroyed castle; wall also to be faced with ashlar from castle.

{7} At northernmost end of wall stood postern gate; now removed.

{8} Postern gate stood at north end of wall exposed during excavations; now removed.

{9} On the edge of a retaining wall above St Andrew’s Road the site of the postern gate (which was reconstructed by the entrance to Castle Station).
