Full Description

{1} Windmill Mound (?) (SP 77396130), now destroyed, lay at the N. end of Ardington Road, on Northampton Sands, at 89 m. above OD. It was first recorded as a `tumulus' in the middle of the 19th century. The earliest map of Abington parish, of 1671, though not depicting the mound, shows that the area immediately to the S. was then known as `The Open Field beneath Windmill Hill'. This suggests that the mound may have been the site of a medieval windmill, though it could have been an earlier barrow reused.

{2} Marked as 'tumulus';

{4} Describes walk along footpath to Weston Favell & observation of remains of tumulus in first field on right-hand side in Abington Park; first reference to 'tumulus';

{5} 3 sherds early Saxon pottery;

{6} Site of possible round barrow;

{7} Reference made to small mound in vicinity of Saxon burial site in Ardington Rd; mound was never excavated & greater part built over;

{8} Area immediately to south of possible windmill mound known as 'Open Field beneath Windmill Hill'.

{9} Indicated site now built over.

{10} On the OS 1" of 1820-30 there appears to be the indication of a small mound; not described.
