Full Description

{1} The excavation confirmed the presence of several phases of burials suggesting the graveyard had been in use from at least the 16th century until the 19th century. No building remains were present.

{2} Present boundary is mapped but this may have altered over time.

{3} Human bone could be evidence of late medieval or early post-medieval burials although no grave cuts were apparent. A thin layer of slag, ash and small stones appeared to be the remains of a path.

{4}{5} Disarticulated human bone and post medieval coffin handles were found and reburied. Three articulated burials were also partially exposed and reburied.

{6} Around the edges of the new-build further reduction of the wall-lines down to natural geology cut through the bones of three articulated burials. All were aligned east-west (heads to the west), but none lay fully within the excavated area so none was fully exposed. Their locations were noted and the bones set aside for reburial.
It is clear that the area of the new-build contains possibly a much lower density of burials than was discovered in earlier excavation around the chancel (Hayward, 2001). Disarticulated bone suggests previous disturbance of burials in this vicinity, not least due to the former wall foundation, the slat-glazed drain and the 1923 church extension.

A brick drainage gully rested at foundation level at the foot of an escarpment in the churchyard, designed to prevent water from collecting in the foundations. This was removed.
Alongside the church and outside the line of the aisle buttress lay a C19th or early C20th drain of salt-glazed pipes. This may have served the brick drainage gully above and alongside it.

{7} Lychgate by Edmund Law, 1897.
