Summary

Landscape park and formal gardens at Aynho Park. The gardens were laid out from 1660 and included formal gardens created by Mr Guillam after 1700. Further formal gardens were laid out after 1850 but were removed after the First World War. The park was laid out circa 1701 and was landscaped by Lancelot Brown in 1760 for William Cartwright, replacing most of the formal gardens. The park was extended in the 1790s. Humphry Repton visited the park in 1796-97 and produced two plans for the park.

Full Description

{1} Deer park was enclosed in 16th century

{2} Painting of a hunting scene in Aynho Park, painted in 1764 by Francis Sartorius. It depicts the parkland, church, house and windmill.

{3} Eyre's second edition map shows small line of trees only.

{4} Park enlarged and ornamented with extensive plantations by present proprietor Will Ralph Cartwright M.P. Lord of the Manor. Owned 2245 acres; 700 acres old demense; rest enclosed by Act of Parliament 1792.

{6} The park is stone walled and there is no evidence of an early park.

{7}Capability Brown designed parkland for client Will Cartwright M.P. in 1760-3. Work cost £1, 300. No lake. The park is now separately owned and farmed.

{10}Land owned by Cartwrights 1615-1959. Will Cartwright M.P. commissioned design for landscaping park from Capability Brown between 1760 and 1763. Paid Brown £1,300 for carrying out the scheme. Masses of trees, perimeter belts. Pleasure grounds for walking as opposed to park for riding. Shrubberies once extensive but now much reduced. Some fine specimen trees still. Repton carried out work in 1798 and apologised for bill as so little work had been done.

{11}Describes process for enclosure of parkland; led to the destruction of 30 buildings (for village) and required re-alignment of road.
