Monument record 374 - Hellidon

Please read our .

Summary

Hellidon is not mentioned in Domesday Book, but from the 13th century onwards there appear to have been two main manors in the parish, one known as Giffords Manor and the other as Baskervilles. The existence of the two manors may have helped to shape the morphology of the village.

Full Description

{?} Hellidon has a very irregular plan form with at least two substantial greens. It comprises at least seven or eight blocks of tenements divided by roads. Might possibly prove to be a woodland clearance context given the irregularity. Closes on the south side might represent regular tenement rows but probably were merely open field furlongs enclosed late for pasture.
