Monument record 3141/1/6 - Romano-British Quarries For Road Materials

{1}The northern part of the road had been surfaced with gravel obtained from quarry pits and ditches to the side.

{2} A 3m section across the north end of the agger revealed a complex sequence of ditches and pits on either side of the road. All of the quarry pits contained very mixed fills of loamy deposits with pockets of sandy gravel, suggesting that they had been backfilled by hand rather than exposed to natural deposition. The excavated evidence suggests that the majority of the gravel for the road was obtained at the east side of the site.
