Summary

Staged archaeological investigation was undertaken prior to development at Grange Park. Excavation Areas 9 and 10 revealed two parallel ditches aligned north-east to south-west, interpreted as a droveway, which were succeeded by four enclosures, one of which had a large cluster of pits just outside it. Southeast of the droveway was another enclosure and part of a penannular ring ditch.

Full Description

{2} The trenches excavated in Enclosure Complex 3 confirm the readings of the geophsical survey which noted the existence of small enclosures, linear and pit-like features, along with a double ditched trackway. The pottery from the evaluation trenches indicates that the settlement and trackway are of mid late Iron Age date. The flat bottomed pits found in Trench 13 are possibly rubbish pits indicative of a domestic habitation in the immediate vicinity.

{4} Excavation undertaken in 1999. Excavation Areas 9 and 10 revealed complex of archaeological features. Two parallel ditches interpreted as a droveway were succeeded by four enclosures, one of which had a large cluster of pits just outside it. Southeast of the droveway was another enclosure and part of penannular ring ditch.

{5} Possibly two parallel ditches; NCC Aerial Photograph No:SP7654/002.

{6} Two parallel linear ditches, 5.0m apart were aligned northeast-southwest. Both ditches terminated to the southwest and extended beyond the edge of excavations to the northeast. These ditches were interpreted as a droveway and were succeeded by four enclosures.
