Full Description

{1} Bradden was first documented in Domesday Book, as two small manors with a recorded population of 6. In 1301 23 people paid the Lay Subsidy Tax and in the same tax of 1334 Bradden together with Slapton paid 79 shillings. The Poll Tax Returns of 1377 indicate that as least 52 people over the age of 14 were living in Bradden. Thereafter there is no record of the size of the village until about 1720 when there were 25 families. In 1801 the population of the parish was 156. A map of 1740 and the surviving earthworks show that the two lanes running east from the present single street were formerly connected to form a loop, most of which was built up, though at the south west end of the village are house sites abandoned prior to 1740. The loop road to 1740. The loop road is shown cut by a field boundary in 1803.

{2} There has been very little additional building within the settlement between the two maps (the draft Enclosure Map of 1803 and the 1880s 1st edition OS map) but the plan form has changed with a back lane running behind the tenements on the east of the road being taken out at enclosure. Several large fishponds in a close to the east of the road, (noted in browser) have also gone by 1880.

{10} Collection of photographs of buildings in the village.
