Full Description

{3} Two maps of 1587 and 1684 show the area of earthworks to the south-west of the current village as already abandoned. The available documentary evidence appears to suggest that Hardwick was always small and never suffered a major reduction in population. The Domesday Book lists a recorded population of 14. In 1348/9 the vill paid tax of 35s 6d. 14 people paid Hearth Tax. In 1801 there was a total of 68 people in the entire parish.
