Full Description

{7-20} Woodland features of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks, levelled earthworks, and cropmarks and were mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located within the extent of the former Whittlewood Forest, Pottersbury, Whittlebury, Deanshanger and Lillingstone Lovell and centred at SP 72374 42325. Some of the southern boundaries of the extent of the Forest form the parish boundaries. A road that formed the southern extent of the forest is visible only as cropmark after it was superseded by a new, straight road after 1814 (see Bucks HER MBC12531). Features inside the woodland are coppice boundaries, rides and trackways, the site of former homesteads, extractive pits, charcoal burning hearths, and ridge and furrow earthworks. Some of the land that was in the forest is within the current parkland at Wakefield Lodge and some of it has been converted to arable land use, the area of woodland has been much reduced compared to what is shown on the Epoch 1 Ordnance Survey map. The 1787 plan of the Forest of Whittlewood gives the coppice and woodland names. The area included in this record is that for grid square SP74SW, which was on the edge of the project area and includes area in Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire.
