Abstract/Summary

The desk-based assessment and survey has found evidence of three low density prehistoric flint scatters and two Iron Age/Romano-British sites in the area of the pipeline. Medieval pottery, possibly indicating a manuring scatter, was also recovered from the north of the proposed pipeline route while undated charcoal filled pits are known from the southern extent of the route. The route crosses the former Whittlewood Forest and some linear earthworks within the former wood have been located. Colluvial cover is likely to be present in some locations. The new pipeline will, therefore, have a significant impact on the archaeology of this area of Midlands clayland landscape.
