Full Description
{1} Detailed account of the fields in Cotton and Hardingstone. The land of St Leonards Farm was made up of half-acre strips scattered over the fields of Cotton and Hardingstone. Details of field names listed and how each was subdivided up into strips. East End Open Field System; the medieval fields were surviving in 1972 as pasture ridge and furrow with low linear headland earthworks in the arable fields. In its final form it was typical of a central Nene valley parish where the whole landscape was ploughed except the flooding meadows (pasture). No records of manorial courts on how the fields were cultivated and regulated. The East End fields were known as Upper (alias Preston Hedge), Middle, Moor and Firedale Fields. From terriers of 1660 it shows a typical C17th landscape. The East End Fields lay to the east of the former road between Nunn Mills and Hardingstone.
