Abstract/Summary
Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted a desk-based assessment on land at Pavilion Drive, Brackmills, Northampton in advance of the proposed construction of the Criminal Justice Centre. Searches were undertaken of the relevant local depositories including Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record and Northamptonshire Record Office to gain information about the known or potential archaeological resource within the site. This site has not been classified as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, nor is it included on the Register of Parks and Gardens. The border of the statutorily protected site of the Battle of Northampton lies across the A45 to the north of the site. A number of archaeological sites have been recorded in the vicinity of the proposed developments that may have some relevance regarding any potential archaeology. The site formed part of Hardingtone's field system during the medieval period and has not subsequently been developed. A medieval road ran along the western boundary of the site and it has been interpreted in the past as having Roman origins. It is possible that some evidence of this road may still be present within the site boundaries. Levelling of the site may have destroyed earthwork remains of the road, but below ground remains may have survived.
