Full Description

{1} Owner Alfred Hickman Ltd. From 4.07.1897. The leased land lay one to one and half miles north of Kings Sutton mostly 400ft and at least 100ft above the level of the GWR main line to which the iron ore was to be consigned. Transfer arrangements which were unique among ironstone quarries were made 1 1/2miles north of Kings Sutton station. Three 65ft high kilns were erected alongside the GWR line for the ore to be calcined. From the ironstone pits a 2ft.1inch guage tramway on a viaduct to the top of the kilns over which a tippler dock was situated allowing the ore to be tipped directly into the kilns. The quarry was last worked in March of 1924.
