Monument record 247/1 - Culworth Mill

Please read our .

Summary

At Domesday in 1086, Culworth had one mill. The mill is documented in various post-medieval documents and is depicted as either 'Culworth Mill' or Trafford Mill' on historic maps. The last mention of the mill in trade directories was in 1903, although the millhouse still survives as a residence. Cropmarks are visible to the west of mill and geophysical survey has identified these and further features to the east and south, all of which are likely to be associated with it. The geophysical survey also identified the former mill race and leats to the north of the extant mill building.

{2} Geophysical survey was undertaken as part of the HS2 project on land around Culworth Mill in 2013. Around the mill there were a number of postive magnetic responses of probable archaeological origin which may relate to the mill [those to the west have already been recorded as cropmarks]. To the north of the mill were a series of dipolar magnetic anomalies that would normally be interpreted as a zone of magnetic disturbance. Cartographic evidence, however, shows that this anomaly marks the old mill race and leats. Evidence of ridge and furrow was also recorded.
