Full Description
{2} The priory was granted a mill in the foundation charter, and later was given licence to (?re-)build a watermill in the mill croft.
A water mill attached to South Pond, built in mill croft.
{6} The prior was given licence to build a watermill, the monk's mill stood at the head of the pond on the Eydon Road, where a mill still stood in the C19th.
(3) A building below the lower lake was termed a mill.
{4} 1154-89: Stephen de Leya, lord of the manor, granted a fishpond and mill to the canons of the Priory. However, it is recorded that it was a successor, Robert de Leye, who gave the monks licence to build a mill and make a mill pond in Ashby.
1574: John Dryden had the mills at Canons Ashby.
1822: Both mills at Canons Ashby are described as disused.
Mill was disused by 1822. A considerable time ago, dwellings have been built on the site. The site was visited 30/04/2001. The present dwellings are built into the pond bank. The lower storey is of stone but at ground level there appears to be older stone work which may be related to the former mill. Present buildings are not significant but because of its association with an early monastic establishment the site has some significance. Excavation might reveal evidence of the medieval mill.
{6} The prior was given licence to build a watermill, the monk's mill stood at the head of the pond on the Eydon Road, where a mill still stood in the C19th.
