Full Description

{1} Documentary source which gives mention of a manor and chapel. In the early 13th century licence was given for a chapel to be built with a chantry therein at Astcote for the use of the lord of the manor. The mansion and chapel stood in the Bury field at the south entrance of the village (SP 676 529) The remains of the chapel were converted into a barn, which was taken down within the memory of an old inhabitant.

{2} A farmer said Bury Field was at grid ref. SP67805335 and the barn at SP67875340 but there is no surface indication of a chapel or manor house, and no structural evidence for the chapel in these locations.

{3} No trace has been noted of the manor house and chapel recorded by Baker as having stood at the south end of Astcote.

{4} Mrs Hornsby who's family has farmed the land here for many years stated that the field centred to SP 6780 5335 has always been known as the Bury field. There are no surface indications of the foundations of a chapel or Manor House in the field. There is an old barn in the field at SP 6787 5340 but no evidence for its being part of a chapel were seen.
