Summary

Thorpe Station complex of ring ditches and enclosures of Prehistoric or Roman date seen on air photographs. Prehistoric worked flints have also been recovered from the site, suggesting the manufacture of flint implements from the local gravels.

Full Description

{1} Titchmarsh. TL 020810. St. Joseph AP shows circles in this field. In July 1963 many worked flints were found, including cores, suggesting the manufacture of flint implements from the local gravel. Found within a field containing cropmark ring ditches.

{4} Thorpe Station Complex (centred TL 020810) in the N of the parish SW of Thorpe Station in the angle Formed by the A605 (on the line of the Roman road 570) and the old railway. The remains lie on River Gravel, close to the R.Nene at 90 ft above OD. Air photographs show eight probable ring ditches, two of considerable size, and a number of linear ditches and enclosures. Many worked flints have been found in this area.

Ring ditch (TL 02208119) Diam. 25 m. is partly cut by the modern road which follows the line of the Roman Road 570.

Ring ditch (TL 02128115) Diam. 30 m.

Ring ditch (TL 02108119) and cut by the railway. Diam. approx. 55 m.

Ring ditch (TL 01958102) Diam. 22 m. A linear ditch appears to teminate on its NE side and another apparently runs past it at the same point.

Ring ditch (TL 01988101) Diam. 28 m. It contains a well-defined eccentric pit.

Ring ditch (TL 01978095) Diam. 18 m. Three short lengths of ditch appear to radiate from it.

Ring ditch (TL 01928111) Diam. 8 m.

Enclosure and ditches (TL 01908102 and 01958107) None of the enclosures is complete and no coherent pattern exists
