Abstract/Summary

An archaeological desk-based assessment of land proposed for soil storage in connection with the A43 road improvements found eight areas of potential archaeological significance which may be impacted by the development. These are: (A) two Iron Age settlements south of Towcester; (B) a section of Roman road from Towcester to Alchester; (D) another section of the same Roman road, a section of medieval road from Towcester to a deserted settlement near Whittlebury, and the nearby historic parish boundary; (F) an area of probable medieval earthworks near Syresham; (I) a Roman site near Whitfield; (J and K) an area of archaeological potential at Juniper Hill; (L) the possible site of a medieval earthwork embankment near Tusmore; and (M) the medieval Tusmore to Souldern road. In addition there are a further five areas of extensive soil removal where unforseen archaeological remains may be disturbed. Proposals for the mitigation of impacts upon these sites are presented.
