Full Description

{2} The area of Hazelborough Wood is depicted as woodland on a map of c.1600.

{4} The area of Silverstone circuit lay within the royal forest of Whittlebury. This was a royal game reserve, divided by Henry III into sections known as 'walks'. Medieval forests had a legal meaning, being areas subject to forest law (with its own courts and officials), within which game and timber were reserved for The Crown. Forests were neither exclusively wooded nor devoid of settlement, although forest legislation would have protected much of the land and limited the growth of settlement to some extent.

{7} Hazelborough Wood charcoal spread - without associated finds but probably medieval or earlier.
