Abstract/Summary

Desk-Based Assessment of Land at Harlestone, Northamptonshire, has revealed there is only slight evidence of archaeological remains on the proposed development site Area A, although the site is in an area where there is further archaeological potential. The land lies close to an area of Mesolithic flint material and the wider area, areas B and C includes evidence of Iron Age and Roman period activity. However Area A is beyond the limits of medieval settlement and the village of Harlestone which focuses on the tributary stream of the River Nene some way o the north. The location of areas A, B and C has remained in a marginal location until the 20th century, but has recently seen some encroachment by urban housing north of Northampton. On-site conditions including its location on a slight promontory suggest there is potential for further archaeological evidence, although some damage will have occurred due to agricultural activity and the use of vehicular access routes to the present quarry.
