Abstract/Summary
The northern part of the site lies within the cemetary of St Marys. Five evaluation pits exposed a total of 27 burials, with a further 9 probable graves. The formation level for the new car park was altered to preserve the burials in situ. Eleven burials were excavated as they were on or below the formation level of the new car park. A single, brick-lined, tomb was recorded, possibly the base for a grave marker. The eastern wall of the cemetary was located. To the south of the cemetary the earliest archaeological deposit was a homogenous soil, located wherever groundworks penetrated through modern ground. A malting kiln, rebuilt at least three times was sealed by later buildings and may date to the sixteenth century. The buildings consisted of ironstone footings, laid out around a courtyard, probably in the late 18th or early 19th century. The buildings appear on Hope and Law's map of 1847.
