Abstract/Summary

An archaeological trial evaluation comprising one machine excavated trial trench was carried out by Northamptonshire Archaeology in April 2003 at the Roman station, Irchester (SAM County No NN83). The evaluation revealed the remains of the Roman town defences comprising earthern banks and the remains of a robbed out limestone revetment wall dating to the mid/late 1st-2nd centuries AD, surviving as limestone and mortar foundations. A shallow gully of early Roman date, pre-dating the town defences, was also identified. A small quantitiy of Roman pottery, and two small finds dating to the mid 1st - 3rd centuries AD were recovered.
