Abstract/Summary

In October 2006, Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation on land at Gardenways, Black Pot Lane, Oundle, Northants (NGR TL 0412 8832). This project was commissioned prior to the proposed demolition of the extant residential dwelling and construction of a replacement dwelling. The evaluation was carried out as part of an application for Scheduled Monument Consent. Three archaeological features were identified. These consisted of a pit/quarry pit (F1009) in Trench 1, a probable quarry pit (F1013) in Trench 2, and a robber trench (F1002) in Trench 3. A layer of clay-rich made ground (L1004 + L1011) was identified below a recently formed garden subsoil in all three trenches, and a further possible buried soil deposit (1005) was identified at the easternmost end of Trench 3. The finds recovered during the evaluation suggest the archaeology encountered dates to the post-medieval period, though a small number of residual medieval pottery sherds were present, indicative of activity of this date in the vicinity.
