Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology, commissioned by Ashfield Land Developments Ltd, carried out a desk-based assessment on 31.66ha of land at Brackley Grange, Brackley, Northamptonshire. There are no archaeological sites within the study area, although a few stray finds have been recovered in these and surrounding fields by previous fieldwalking. Cropmarks in the surrounding area indicate a general later prehistoric presence, probably from the Iron Age into the Romano-British period. A recent archaeological evaluation on land to the north-east has located an Iron Age settlement on similar terrain to the study area. The area of the potential development lies in what was once the open fields to the west of the town, which may have been cultivated since at least the 12th century, with scatters of medieval pottery from manuring spreads being found during fieldwalking.
